News - 1st Herne Bay Scouts Receive PC Donation1st Herne Bay Scouts Receive PC Donation through Local Computers for Charities Scheme![]() The 1st Herne Bay Scout Group was formed very shortly after Baden Powell's first scout camp on Brownsea Island in August 1907, as such it is now one of the oldest scout groups in the country. The scout movement was 100 years old this year, and all the groups in the country have celebrated the event with special camps and activities. Some scout groups even attended the World Jamboree. This was held in Hylands Park, Essex and had almost 100,000 visitors of all nationalities during the two weeks that it was open. The 1st Herne Bay Scouts Group consists of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and is part of the Canterbury, Whitstable and Herne Bay District. The group meets in its own headquarters in Arkley Road Herne Bay; these were built in 1928 and are probably one of the oldest purposes built scout huts in the world. The group is currently undertaking a building refurbishment programme to ensure it continues into the future. Canterbury based ADM Computing recently donated a refurbished pc to the 1st Herne Bay Scouts Group through their 'Computers for Charities' scheme. The Scouts will use the equipment as part of their training programme. The pc will also be used for correspondence, scout newsletters and to ensure that records are kept up to date. The 1st Herne Bay is also trying to make sure that its history is recorded and if anyone has any memories they would like to share, especially if you are an ex member, the group would appreciate hearing from you. Whilst scouting is for young people there is always a need for adult help. Experience is not necessary as full training is available. The 1st Herne Bay group is currently full, with a waiting list, but for more information on Scout Groups in the area visit www.canterburyscouts.org.uk Any charities that feel they would benefit from a Computer for Charities donation should contact Ana Smith on 01227 473512 or via email: ana@adm-computing.co.uk |
